Counter-UAS

C-UAS Defense of unmanned aircraft systems

Developments | Technologies | Systems

Drones are useful and versatile: e.g. for exploring the location of major fires, generally in the event of a disaster, for inspecting forests, and in the future also for transporting parcels and letters. But drones can also become dangerous if they are misused for terrorist purposes - and there are a variety of conceivable threat scenarios. Fraunhofer VVS therefore relies on various approaches and technologies for the detection and defense of unmanned aerial systems.

1. Sensor technology for detection and identification

  • radio, acoustics, radar or infrared and electro-optics: Used in combination for safe, fast detection
  • sensor data fusion to emphasize the strength and eliminate the weakness of individual sensors

2.  Defense

  • various approaches such as HPM (high power microwaves), directed blasting, laser dazzling, and special C-UAS ammunition
  • decision support components for the scalable use of countermeasures, e.g. locating and disrupting radio communication links
  • jamming and spoofing (to take over the remote control)

3.  Situation assessment and decision support

  • development, demonstration, test, and evaluation
  • experimental system and sensor evaluation
  • foresight, continuous assessment of the status quo and participative analyses
  • adaptation of the physical hazard models for C-UAS scenarios
  • analysis and evaluation of data links in the area of C-UAS

Defense against drones

Drones are useful, but they can also be dangerous if misused for terrorism. Fraunhofer is developing technology designed to serve as a defense against unmanned aerial systems.
