Fast and Precise: Optical and electronic security systems

 

Fraunhofer IAF is one of the few research facilities worldwide which have mastered the entire supply chain in the area of III-V semiconductors and synthetic diamonds at the highest international level. Based on years of experience, highly qualified employees and modern equipment, optical and electronic devices and systems are developed. For the application in the security technology the Fraunhofer IAF produces infrared lasers and detectors, UV cameras, high frequency and power electronics as well as sensors for gases and liquids. For the implementation of the research program a clean room with modern semiconductors process technology as well as an excellent equipped measurement technology is at the institutes’ disposal.

The F&T-results are normally transferred to industrial companies for serial production. If, by reason of small quantities, no commercial partner for realization can be found the institute is also able to supply its clients reliably with small series in high quality. Fraunhofer IAF makes an important contribution to the supply of the national and European industry with components, which are based on innovative semiconductor technologies.

 

Examples for the successful transfer of our research results are:

  • Broadband jammers for the suppression of wireless signals which activate explosive devices.
  • Imaging millimeter-wave systems which detect concealed weapons.
  • Radar sensors which support helicopter pilots during dangerous landing operations under brownout (dust) or whiteout (snow) conditions.
  • Fast-switching protective filters which guard infrared sensors against blinding sunlight and direct optical countermeasures.
  • Imaging dual-color infrared sensors which warn aircrafts against approaching missiles
  • Optical systems for stand-off detection of smallest traces of explosives on surfaces.
  • Novel miniaturized sensors which detect hazardous substances in water and in the air.
